Where it came from
Boneclad Necromancer was released in 2024 as part of the Foundations Jumpstart set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to act as an accessible entry point for new players, utilizing a specialized 'Jumpstart' format where pre-constructed thematic packets are shuffled together for immediate play. The inclusion of cards like this necromancer reflects the set's intent to provide evergreen mechanics and flavor that define the core experience of the game's various color identities.
The card features artwork consistent with the dark, gothic aesthetic associated with black mana in the Magic multiverse. Its design focuses on the necromancy trope, emphasizing the manipulation of the graveyard as a resource. While the illustration follows the stylistic guidelines established for the modern era of the game, it serves the mechanical purpose of reinforcing the set's goal of teaching players how resource management works within the context of creature-based combat and graveyard recursion.
