Provenance

Where it came from

Boneknitter was released in 2002 as part of the Onslaught expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Otaria, the expansion focused heavily on tribal synergies and creature-type mechanics, with Boneknitter serving as a key utility creature for the Zombie tribal archetype. It was designed to provide players with a way to regenerate their graveyard-focused creatures, reflecting the set's broader preoccupation with death, decay, and the manipulation of the afterlife.

The artwork was commissioned from longtime Magic artist Pete Venters, whose work defined much of the game’s aesthetic during this era. Venters utilized a dark, visceral color palette to illustrate the creature’s unsettling ability to weave together remains, leaning into the grotesque high-fantasy horror theme common to the black-aligned cards of the Onslaught block. Upon release, it became a staple in limited formats for its resilience and ability to stall out board states in aggressive matchups.
