Where it came from
Booby Trap was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as an artifact card that forces an opponent to reveal cards from their library, dealing damage based on the revealed card's type. This set was notable for introducing the Buyback mechanic and being the first set designed by Mike Elliott, who sought to create a more cohesive mechanical identity for the game's expansion releases.
The card features illustration by artist Quinton Hoover, known for his distinctive, stained-glass inspired aesthetic and heavy ink lines. His work on Booby Trap captures the mechanical, somewhat whimsical danger associated with the card's function. While the card is often cited by players for its nostalgic value and unique psychological role in gameplay, it has remained a niche piece that sees limited competitive play, reflecting a specific era of artifact design that prioritized unpredictable, high-variance board states.
