Where it came from
Boreas Charger was introduced in the Commander 2021 release, a set of five preconstructed decks designed to bring the complex and social playstyle of the Magic: The Gathering Commander format to a broader audience. Released in April 2021, the card debuted in the 'Lorehold Legacies' deck, which focused on the red-and-white colors and the archeology-themed students of the Strixhaven University setting. The card was created to provide white-aligned decks with a reliable source of card advantage and land ramp, specifically balancing the game state when playing against opponents with more resources.
The artwork for Boreas Charger was commissioned from illustrator Bram Sels, who captured the majestic, elemental essence of the creature in flight. Sels employed a dynamic, sweeping composition that emphasizes the charger’s ethereal nature and connection to the sky, fitting the aesthetic requirements of the Strixhaven setting. The card was well-received by the Commander community upon release, particularly by players who valued its ability to help white decks keep pace with the faster ramp mechanics common in the multiplayer format.
