Where it came from
Borne Upon a Wind was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair series, a line of premium, curated cards featuring distinct artistic collaborations. The card itself originated as a powerful instant-speed spell within the Commander Masters expansion, designed to allow players to cast nonland cards as though they had flash, effectively altering the tempo of multiplayer gameplay.
The Secret Lair version, numbered 2228, features a unique aesthetic approach that highlights the intersection of fantasy illustration and modern graphic design. By commissioning specific artists for these drops, Wizards of the Coast aimed to offer collectors alternative, stylized interpretations of game mechanics that stand out from standard set releases. These cards were generally well-received by the player community for their collectibility and the opportunity to personalize deck aesthetics.
