Where it came from
Released as part of the 2023 Magic: The Gathering 'Tales of Middle-earth' promotion, this card commemorates Boromir, the eldest son of Denethor II. The set was designed to integrate J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium into the mechanics of the game, with this specific promotional variant serving as an alternative art treatment intended to highlight the character’s solemn duty as the Warden of the Tower.
The artwork for this version was commissioned to emphasize the stoic, tragic gravity of Boromir's role in the defense of Gondor. As with many promotional cards in this collaboration, the design team aimed to balance traditional fantasy aesthetics with the distinct visual identity established by the set’s broader artistic direction, receiving positive attention from players for its evocative portrayal of the character's final stand.
