Provenance

Where it came from

The Bounteous Kirin was released in 2005 as part of the Saviors of Kamigawa set for Magic: The Gathering. Drawing thematic inspiration from Japanese mythology, the set focused on the spirit realm of the Kamigawa plane, where the Kirin are depicted as noble, ethereal manifestations of nature's power. This specific card represents the green-aligned Kirin, designed to integrate with the 'spirit-craft' mechanics that reward players for casting spirit and arcane spells.

The illustration was crafted by artist Christopher Rush, a legendary figure in the early development of Magic: The Gathering. Rush utilized his signature illustrative style to capture the creature's majestic and otherworldly essence, emphasizing the serene, forest-dwelling aspects of the spirit. Within the competitive landscape of the time, the card was viewed primarily as a thematic centerpiece for casual tribal decks, celebrated more for its evocative artwork than for its utility in professional tournament play.
