Where it came from
Braids, Cabal Minion was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Mike Elliott and his team, the set was conceived to focus on the mechanics of the graveyard, reflecting a dark, atmospheric shift in the game's narrative. The character of Braids was introduced as a pivotal figure in the lore, serving as a demented artificer and a key player within the Cabal, a secretive organization operating on the plane of Otaria.
The card's iconic illustration was rendered by artist Kev Walker, known for his distinctively gritty and macabre style. Walker's portrayal of Braids captures her unsettling presence and erratic nature, fitting perfectly with the card's disruptive gameplay effect. Upon release, the card quickly became a staple in competitive play for its ability to force resource attrition, establishing itself as an enduring and memorable element of the Odyssey block's mechanical identity.
