Breath of Life

Breath of Life was released as part of the 1999 Starter Set for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which introduced the game to English-speaking markets following its massive success in Japan. As a Trainer card, it was designed to provide players with a functional recovery mechanic, reflecting the core theme of healing and persistence central to the Pokémon franchise. The card art, consistent with the Base Set aesthetic, utilizes the bright, clean graphic style pioneered by illustrator Keiji Kinebuchi, who played a foundational role in defining the early visual identity of the game.

The reception of this card within the 1999 Starter Set was largely pragmatic, as it served as a key utility card for new players learning the mechanics of deck building and resource management. While it does not carry the high rarity of holofoil creatures from the same set, it remains a significant piece of trading card history due to its inclusion in the initial wave of global distribution. Its design, characterized by the iconic early layout and static, bold illustration style, serves as a hallmark of the transition of the Pokémon phenomenon into an international competitive pastime.
