Where it came from
Breena, the Demagogue was released in 2021 as part of the Commander 2021 set, specifically within the Silverquill Statement deck. This set was designed to represent the five colleges of Strixhaven: School of Mages, a plane within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse centered on academia and magical study. Breena serves as the legendary avatar for the Silverquill college, which emphasizes the intersection of eloquence, debate, and aggressive political maneuvering.
The card features artwork by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent illustrator known for her elegant and high-fantasy aesthetic. Villeneuve was tasked with visualizing a creature that embodies the power of rhetoric and social influence, resulting in a design that highlights a bird-like humanoid figure radiating authority and sharpness. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its unique ability to incentivize group combat while providing the player with significant card advantage, cementing its place as a staple in political-themed decks.
