Brilliant Plan

Brilliant Plan was released in 1999 as part of the Portal Three Kingdoms set, an expansion for the Magic: The Gathering card game designed specifically for the Asian market. The set was inspired by the 14th-century Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, aiming to introduce players to the game through themes and characters familiar to players in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan. Its mechanics were intentionally simplified compared to the core game sets of the era to ensure accessibility for beginners.

The card features artwork by Qi Xing Hua, reflecting the set’s distinct aesthetic which blended traditional Chinese ink-wash influences with the fantasy art style common to the game at the time. While the set initially faced limited distribution in Western markets, Brilliant Plan later gained notoriety among players for its powerful effect relative to its low mana cost, eventually becoming a staple in various casual formats and a notable collector's piece due to its unique historical context and relatively small initial print run.
