Where it came from
Brokers Ascendancy was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna set for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the Brokers, one of the five crime families that dominate the Art Deco-inspired metropolis of New Capenna, reflecting their focus on legalistic control and protection rackets. This specific promo version, identified by the collector number 170s, features an alternate art style consistent with the 'Gilded' showcase frame treatment intended to evoke the opulent, decadent aesthetic of the setting.
The art for this cycle was commissioned to capture the distinct flavor of the Brokers family, emphasizing their obsession with order and contractual power. Like other cards in the Streets of New Capenna Promos series, this version was designed to serve as a high-visibility centerpiece for collectors, appearing in promotional materials and specific product bundles. Its reception was largely driven by its utility in Commander formats, where the permanent-boosting ability proved highly effective for players focused on creature-heavy strategies.
