Where it came from
Bruse Tarl, Roving Rancher first appeared as a legendary creature in the Commander 2016 set, designed by Wizards of the Coast for the multi-player Commander format. The card features art by Aleksi Briclot, who crafted a rugged, adventurous aesthetic to match the character's flavor as a wandering hero of the plains. Mechanically, the card was built around the Partner mechanic, allowing players to pair Bruse with other commanders to expand their deck's color identity and strategic reach.
The inclusion of this specific card in The List—a curated selection of reprints integrated into Magic: The Gathering booster packs—serves to keep older, popular cards accessible to modern players. This version, identified by the OTJ-198 collector number, highlights the card's enduring utility in Boros-aligned aggressive and mid-range decks. The design intent remains focused on providing a high-impact combat commander that rewards proactive gameplay and creature synergy.
