Where it came from
The Bull Hippo card was released as part of the Portal set in 1997, a beginner-friendly product line designed by Wizards of the Coast to lower the barrier to entry for Magic: The Gathering. At the time, the game was growing rapidly, and Portal was developed to offer simplified mechanics and distinct, flavor-forward art to attract players who found the standard base sets too complex or intimidating.
The art for this card, featuring a stout and aggressive hippopotamus, was created by illustrator Heather Hudson. Her work for the Portal set prioritized clear, illustrative visuals that matched the accessible tone of the gameplay. While the card is mechanically straightforward and intended for entry-level play, it has remained a charming piece of the game's mid-nineties expansion history, representing an era where the game's aesthetic was diversifying to reach a broader audience.
