Provenance

Where it came from

Released in October 1998 as part of the Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering, Bull Hippo represents a period of significant growth for the trading card game. This set was the first to introduce the enchantment type and marked a shift toward more complex game mechanics centered around the character Urza. As a green creature card, Bull Hippo exemplifies the game's emphasis on nature-themed behemoths during the late 1990s.

The card features artwork by illustrator Greg Staples, who contributed extensively to the game during this era. His design for the Bull Hippo focuses on the creature's immense physical stature, capturing the aesthetic of high-fantasy beasts common to the set's artistic direction. While the card is not considered a competitive staple in historical tournament formats, it remains a recognizable example of the creature design language that defined the Urza block.
