Burgeoning first appeared in the 1999 Prophecy expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team to explore complex resource management mechanics. The card was specifically crafted to reward players for holding land cards in their hand, offering an unorthodox acceleration strategy that departed from the traditional method of playing one land per turn. As a niche enchantment, it introduced a high-risk, high-reward playstyle that challenged the conventions of deck building during the late nineties.

The card was later added to The List, a curated selection of cards from throughout the game's history that appear in Set Boosters. The original illustration by Eric Peterson captures the card's theme of rapid, uncontrolled growth, featuring surreal, organic visuals that typified the aesthetic of the Prophecy set. While it was initially viewed as an experimental design, Burgeoning has since gained a reputation among long-term players for its powerful synergy in multi-player formats, where its ability to trigger on opponents' turns creates significant board pressure.
