Burning Inquiry

Burning Inquiry was introduced in the Magic 2010 core set, released in July 2009. As part of a core set, it was designed to provide a straightforward, high-variance effect that captured the chaotic nature of red mana in Magic: The Gathering. The card allows each player to draw three cards and then discard three cards at random, a mechanic intended to disrupt hand management and force players to adapt to unpredictable new resources.

The card was illustrated by Dave Kendall, whose dark, visceral aesthetic was selected to convey the frantic, volatile energy of the spell. Upon its release, the card was viewed primarily as a niche effect, though its low mana cost eventually saw it gain traction in eternal formats as a powerful tool for decks relying on graveyard synergies and discard-based strategies. It remains a notable example of randomized draw mechanics in the game's design history.
