Where it came from
Burning Sun Cavalry was released in late 2023 as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, a Magic: The Gathering expansion set that returned players to the Mesoamerican-inspired plane of Ixalan. Designed to support the set's focus on creature-based combat and tribal synergies, the card reflects the aesthetic of the Sun Empire, a civilization characterized by its utilization of dinosaurs and solar-themed iconography. It was created to provide a reliable mid-range presence for limited gameplay formats, emphasizing the set's mechanical themes of exploration and territorial control.
The card features artwork by artist Manuel Castañón, who employed a vibrant, warm color palette to evoke the harsh, radiant environment of the cavern-dwelling empire. The visual design highlights the symbiotic relationship between the cavalry and their dinosaur mounts, aligning with the artistic direction of the set which prioritized lush, subterranean landscapes and bold, heroic character silhouettes. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its utility in draft and sealed environments, serving as a solid example of the set's emphasis on combat efficiency.
