Where it came from
Bury in Books was released in 2022 as part of the Jumpstart 2022 set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to be a self-contained, highly replayable experience where players combine two randomized packs to create a functional deck, making it accessible for both newcomers and veteran players. The card serves as a thematic piece within the set's broader exploration of whimsical and sometimes dark fantasy motifs.
The card features illustration by Wisnu Tan, who rendered the subject with a balanced blend of intricate detail and vibrant color, fitting the established aesthetic of modern Magic expansions. The design choice aimed to capture a narrative moment of literal bibliomania, framing the act of research as an overwhelming physical force. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, niche utility piece that leans into the set's focus on synergistic play styles rather than competitive power. It remains a representative example of the character-driven art direction prioritized by Wizards of the Coast for their supplemental product lines.
