Provenance

Where it came from

Call of the Wild was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the game's early focus on summoning creatures directly from the library to the battlefield. The card is a rare enchantment that reflects the primal, untamed nature of Green-aligned magic, allowing players to pay mana to put a random creature from their library onto the battlefield at the end of a turn.

The artwork for the Eighth Edition printing, released in 2003, was illustrated by Heather Hudson. As part of the core set transition, this version updated the card frame to the modern layout while retaining the classic, illustrative style typical of the era. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche utility piece, valued more for its thematic resonance with nature-based decks than for competitive dominance in tournament settings.
