Where it came from
Call the Spirit Dragons was released as part of the Tarkir: Dragonstorm set, an expansion that revisited the time-altered history of the Tarkir plane. In this narrative arc, the timeline was shifted by the planeswalker Sarkhan Vol, resulting in a world where dragons never went extinct and instead rose to dominate the environment. The design of this card reflects the set's central theme of draconic power and the mystical connection between the region's clans and their ancestral spirits.
The card’s artwork follows the aesthetic direction established for the Tarkir block, focusing on vibrant, high-fantasy visuals that emphasize scale and elemental magic. Illustrators tasked with the Dragonstorm set aimed to portray the dragons not just as creatures, but as omnipresent forces of nature that fundamentally shaped the cultures of the plane. Upon its release, the set was well-regarded by players for its complex draft environment and its successful integration of alternate-history storytelling into the mechanical design of the cards.
