Where it came from
Camouflage was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering, the pioneering trading card game developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast. Beta served as the second print run of the core set, following the limited Alpha release, and is defined by its rounded corners and updated text formatting. The card occupies a unique space in the game's history as part of a cycle of enchantments that experiment with unconventional mechanics, in this case, manipulating the visibility of creatures during combat.
The card’s visual identity was established by artist Anson Maddocks, who contributed a significant number of illustrations to the game’s early sets. His design for Camouflage leans into a surreal, painterly aesthetic common to the era, utilizing muted tones to evoke the tactical nature of the titular concept. Upon release, the card became a subject of discussion due to its complex rules interaction, which requires players to secretly designate attackers. It is regarded today as a quintessential artifact of the game’s foundational period, valued by collectors for its role in the evolution of early card design.
