Canopy Baloth

Canopy Baloth was originally printed in the 2002 Scourge expansion, representing the high-power, high-cost design philosophy of Magic: The Gathering's early era. It serves as a classic example of a 'green fatty,' a creature card intended to stabilize the board during late-game stages in limited play environments. Its inclusion in 'The List'—a curated selection of reprints appearing in Set Boosters—reintroduces cards from across the game's history to modern players, maintaining its legacy as a straightforward, efficient behemoth of the forest.

The card’s illustration, originally created by Matt Cavotta, utilizes an earthy palette and a sense of scale to convey the intimidating nature of the Baloth creature. Cavotta’s work during this period was known for emphasizing the raw, organic power of the game’s bestial designs. While the card is not a tournament staple, it is recognized by veteran players for its role in establishing the archetype of bulky, trampling green creatures that define the color's identity.
