Where it came from
Canyon Jerboa was released in 2020 as part of the Zendikar Rising expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to highlight the set's focus on the 'Landfall' mechanic, a thematic hallmark of the Zendikar plane that rewards players for playing land cards. Within the game's mechanics, the creature serves as an uncommon support card, intended to bolster aggressive white-aligned decks by providing a temporary power boost to the controller's creatures whenever a land enters the battlefield.
The visual design of the creature, illustrated by artist Wisnu Tan, captures the nimble and desert-dwelling essence of the jerboa, a real-world rodent known for its high-leaping ability. The artwork emphasizes the creature's oversized ears and powerful hind legs, grounding it in the hazardous, adventure-focused aesthetic that defines the Zendikar setting. Upon its release, it was noted by players as an efficient, low-cost utility creature, frequently utilized in Limited formats to gain an advantage through strategic land placement.
