Casting of Bones

Casting of Bones was released in 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was unique in the game's history as it was designed to serve as a 'lost' third expansion to the original Ice Age block, released over a decade after the block's initial run. The design team sought to capture the frigid, survivalist aesthetic of the original block, utilizing mechanics like cumulative upkeep to emphasize the harsh environment of the setting.

The card features artwork by Anson Maddocks, a foundational artist for the game known for his distinct, often surreal illustrative style. For this piece, Maddocks focused on the grim, mystical nature of the enchantment, illustrating the ritualistic practice of bone divination. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, flavor-focused common that leaned into the black-aligned theme of sacrificing creatures for tactical advantage, fitting seamlessly into the graveyard-recursion archetypes prevalent in Coldsnap limited play.
