Where it came from
Casting of Bones was released in 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was uniquely designed as a 'lost' third installment of the Ice Age block, intended to complete the narrative arc that had been left unresolved since 1996. It drew heavily on Norse mythology and winter-themed motifs, utilizing mechanics that rewarded graveyard interaction and slow, resource-intensive gameplay.
The card features artwork by veteran illustrator Matt Cavotta, who frequently contributed to the game during the mid-2000s. Cavotta aimed to evoke a sense of grim, ancient divination, depicting a shamanistic ritual amidst the harsh, snowy landscape characteristic of the Terisiare region. The design was received by players as a flavorful, if niche, inclusion that reinforced the expansion's focus on dark, atmospheric spellcasting.
