Where it came from
Casualties of War was released as a part of the War of the Spark expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2019. This card functions as a powerful, high-mana removal spell that reflects the thematic devastation of the Planeswalkers' war against Nicol Bolas on the plane of Ravnica. The promo version, marked as 187s, was distributed through various organized play channels, such as store championships or specific event participation rewards, which was a standard practice for the set to encourage competitive engagement.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Daarken, known for his dark and visceral fantasy illustrations. He sought to capture the indiscriminate nature of the spell, illustrating the physical destruction of diverse permanent types—creatures, artifacts, enchantments, and lands—within a single frame. The design was well-received by players for its efficiency in multiplayer formats like Commander, where its versatility as a 'catch-all' answer solidified its place in deck-building circles.
