Where it came from
Catch of the Day was released in 2024 as part of the Mystery Booster 2 set, a supplemental product designed by Wizards of the Coast to celebrate the history of Magic: The Gathering through a curated, draftable experience. The set is notable for its inclusion of 'playtest cards'—experimental, non-tournament-legal designs that feature hand-drawn aesthetics and eccentric mechanics intended to evoke the feel of R&D prototyping.
The card is designed to mimic the whimsical and often chaotic nature of 'silver-bordered' or un-sets, which prioritize humor and unconventional gameplay over strict competitive balance. With its fish-focused theme and quirky utility, the card reflects the design team's effort to create memorable, lighthearted interactions that diverge from the game's more serious core sets, serving as an affectionate nod to the playful side of the game's development cycle.
