Cave Sense

Cave Sense was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Mercadia, the expansion introduced themes of commerce, political intrigue, and non-traditional combat mechanics. The card was designed as a common-rarity enchantment that allowed players to scout the top of their library, reflecting the set's focus on deck manipulation and tactical preparation during a time when the game was shifting toward more complex card-advantage engines.

The artwork for Cave Sense was created by illustrator Randy Elliott, who contributed several pieces to the Mercadian Masques set. His aesthetic approach leaned into the rugged, subterranean visual language of the Mercadian caverns, employing a dark and earthy palette that contrasted with the more polished, high-fantasy visuals found in other contemporary sets. Upon release, the card was received as a niche utility tool, primarily utilized in limited formats where deck thinning and top-deck control provided a subtle but necessary edge.
