Provenance

Where it came from

Cavern Harpy was originally released in the Planeshift expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2001, designed as part of the Phyrexians' infiltration of the plane of Dominaria. The card was illustrated by Ron Spencer, whose work during this era often leaned into the dark, visceral aesthetic characteristic of the Phyrexian aesthetic. Mechanically, it was designed to provide players with a repeatable bounce effect, allowing for the reuse of enter-the-battlefield abilities at the cost of life, a trade-off that defined its utility in competitive play.

The version from 'The List' is a reprint included in recent expansion boosters to provide modern players with access to older, iconic cards. While the card's original release context was focused on the high-fantasy conflict of the Invasion block, its inclusion in 'The List' reflects a curatorial effort by Wizards of the Coast to maintain the availability of legacy-playable cards while preserving their original art and card frame styles for newer generations of collectors.
