Provenance

Where it came from

Celestial Dawn was originally released as a rare enchantment in the 2002 Magic: The Gathering set Torment. Designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team during a period defined by the game's exploration of color identity, the card was intended to provide a powerful tool for players looking to manipulate mana production and color constraints, allowing for more flexible deck building by turning all mana produced by lands into white mana.

The artwork for the card was created by the fantasy illustrator Greg Staples. Staples aimed for a serene yet ethereal aesthetic, employing a palette of soft whites and golds to visually represent the card's theme of spiritual clarity and order. Upon its release, it was regarded as a niche but effective utility card, eventually being included in The List, a curated selection of reprints integrated into modern booster packs to provide players with access to older, iconic, or mechanically interesting cards from the game's history.
