Where it came from
Cephalid Retainer was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced a graveyard-centric theme, shifting the game's mechanics to emphasize resource management through the discard pile. Within the lore of the plane of Otaria, the Cephalids are depicted as a race of intelligent, often antagonistic, cephalopod-like creatures known for their manipulative nature and reliance on illusions.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, a prolific artist for the franchise known for his atmospheric and moody style. The design aimed to reflect the card's mechanical function, which allows a player to protect their creatures by sacrificing a resource from the graveyard, capturing the Cephalids' cold, transactional approach to loyalty. It remains a representative example of the creature designs found in the early 2000s era of the game.
