Where it came from
The Champion Lancer, numbered 11 in the 1999 Starter Set, was released during the initial wave of the game's introduction to international markets. It was designed to serve as a foundational unit for new players, balancing basic attack capabilities with a defensive stat line intended to teach the core mechanics of resource management and positioning. The card reflects the aesthetic shift of late 90s tabletop gaming, prioritizing bold, high-contrast character art that sought to distinguish the game on crowded retail shelves.
The illustration was produced by the internal art studio during a period when the brand was refining its visual identity to appeal to a younger demographic. It was received by the community as a quintessential 'workhorse' card, valued for its reliability in early-game play rather than for any unique mechanical complexity. While it remains a common fixture in the base set, its status has grown among enthusiasts as a nostalgic symbol of the game's formative era.
