Where it came from
Champion of Rhonas was released as a promotional card for the Amonkhet set, which debuted in 2017. As part of the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, this card was distributed through various organized play channels, such as Prerelease events or store-level promotions. The set was inspired by ancient Egyptian mythology, centering on the trials of the god Rhonas, a deity of strength and prowess. The illustration by Zack Stella captures this theme, depicting the warrior-like avatar of the god's influence in a vibrant, sun-drenched aesthetic that defines the plane of Amonkhet.
The design of the card emphasizes the mechanical identity of the green color alignment in Magic: The Gathering, focusing on creature-based synergy and the 'exert' mechanic unique to the set. Designers sought to create a tension between aggression and stamina, rewarding players for pushing their creatures beyond their typical limits at the cost of skipping an untap step. The artwork and mechanical execution were well-received by the community for their thematic cohesion, cementing the Champion as a recognizable figure within the lore of the Trials of the Five Gods.
