Charcoal Diamond

Charcoal Diamond was originally printed in the Mirage expansion in 1996 as a way to provide color-specific mana acceleration for black decks. By the time it was reprinted for Commander 2014, it had become a staple utility artifact for casual formats, valued for its ability to smooth out mana curves in decks with heavy black mana requirements. The 2014 printing marked its inclusion in the 'Sworn to Darkness' preconstructed deck, which was designed to highlight the themes of black mana manipulation and graveyard interaction.

Artist Lindsey Look illustrated this version of the card, moving away from the abstract, gem-centric aesthetic of the original 1990s artwork. Look’s design emphasizes a more tangible, mystical quality, grounding the object within the high-fantasy visual language established for the Commander product line.
