Where it came from
Chief of the Scale was released in 2014 as part of the Khans of Tarkir expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the war-torn plane of Tarkir, the card represents the Abzan Houses, a faction characterized by their defensive military tactics and survivalist culture. The design reflects the Abzan's mechanical focus on toughness-based synergies, rewarding players for maintaining a sturdy board state in an environment dominated by fierce clan warfare.
The card was illustrated by the artist Johannes Voss, who captured the stoic, armored aesthetic of the Abzan. Voss employed a heavy, textured style to emphasize the soldier's protective gear and the oppressive, desert-like climate of their territory. Upon its release, the card was widely utilized in Limited formats as a key defensive tool for white-black decks, praised for its ability to bolster the durability of other creatures on the battlefield.
