What it does

Trample

When Child of Alara dies, destroy all nonland permanents. They can't be regenerated.

Provenance

Where it came from

Child of Alara was released in 2009 as a mythic rare card in the Magic: The Gathering set Conflux. It represents the literal embodiment of the plane of Alara, a world that had been shattered into five separate shards and was reunited during the events of the Alara block storyline. Mechanically, the card was designed to function as a powerful board wipe, reflecting the destructive and transformative energy required to meld the five distinct mana-aligned worlds back into one cohesive plane.

The artwork for the card was created by fantasy illustrator Lars Grant-West. He was tasked with visualizing a being of immense, overwhelming scale that simultaneously captured the aesthetic essence of all five colors of magic. The resulting piece depicts the entity as a cosmic, multi-limbed figure emerging from a central nexus of light. Upon its release, the card was noted for its unique role in Commander format decks, where players valued its ability to act as both a threat and a tactical reset button for the battlefield.
