Where it came from
The Cho-Arrim Legate was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to shift the game’s aesthetic away from the high-fantasy tropes of previous sets, focusing instead on the trade-heavy, stratified society of the plane of Mercadia. The card represents a member of the Cho-Arrim, a nomadic rebel faction seeking to overthrow the corrupt government of the city-state of Mercadia, reflecting the set's themes of political tension and organized resistance.
The artwork was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic artists in the early history of the game. His depiction of the Legate leans into the distinct, often unconventional character designs that defined the visual language of the Mercadian Masques era. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece within limited formats, valued by players for its ability to provide specific protection based on the colors of the opponent's spells, a design motif common to the era's focus on color-specific strategic interaction.
