Where it came from
Cho-Manno's Blessing was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to shift the game’s narrative to the plane of Mercadia, a world defined by its complex mercantile culture and political intrigue. Mechanically, the card was created to provide a versatile form of protection, allowing players to grant a creature protection from a color while simultaneously offering a temporary safeguard against destruction.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by D. Alexander Gregory, who contributed a distinct, ethereal style to this era of the game. The imagery depicts a divine or spiritual intervention surrounding Cho-Manno, the legendary rebel leader of the Cho-Arrim. Within the context of the game’s lore, the blessing reflects the mystical armor and spiritual resolve of the Mercadian rebels. While the card is viewed primarily as a functional tool for white-aligned decks, its legacy remains tied to the unique aesthetic and strategic identity of the Mercadian Masques set.
