Where it came from
The Chromeshell Crab was released in 2019 as part of the Commander 2019 set, specifically debuting in the 'Mystic Intellect' preconstructed deck. Designed by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering Commander format, this card emphasizes the blue color identity's penchant for control and trickery. Its inclusion in this specific product line served to support the deck's overarching theme of casting spells from the graveyard and manipulating board states through complex utility creatures.
The artwork for the card was executed by illustrator Nils Hamm, whose distinctive, painterly style is known for creating atmospheric and often surreal creature designs. For this piece, Hamm focused on the mechanical and crustacean hybridity of the creature, aiming to capture a sense of defensive utility. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid inclusion for decks focused on 'blink' or 'morph' mechanics, gaining appreciation from players for its ability to swap control of permanents.
