Chronomaton

The Chronomaton was released in 2014 as part of the Duel Decks: Jace vs. Vraska set, a product line designed by Wizards of the Coast to facilitate thematic head-to-head play between two iconic Planeswalkers. The set was conceived to highlight the distinct mechanical philosophies of the blue-aligned Jace Beleren, characterized by control and manipulation, and the black-green-aligned Vraska, known for assassination and board interaction. The Chronomaton served as a versatile artifact creature within Jace's deck, offering a repeatable mana-sink ability that allowed players to grow the creature over time, reflecting the theme of time-based scaling.

Artist Vincent Proce provided the illustration for the card, leaning into the aesthetic of a brass-constructed automaton infused with arcane energy. Proce’s design sought to evoke a sense of mechanical precision and impending movement, capturing the card's function as a ticking time bomb on the battlefield.
