Cinder Seer

Cinder Seer was released in 1999 as part of the Urza's Destiny set, the final expansion in the Urza block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed by Wizards of the Coast to conclude the block's narrative-heavy focus on the artificer Urza and the phyrexian invasion, introducing mechanics that heavily emphasized artifacts and complex board interactions. The card itself reflects the thematic shift toward aggressive red-aligned creatures that were intended to provide tactical utility in draft environments.

The artwork for Cinder Seer was provided by illustrator Greg Staples. Staples, a veteran artist for the game, opted for a dramatic, low-light aesthetic that highlights the character's elemental affinity with fire. The design sought to balance the card's low power-to-mana cost ratio by offering a flexible ability that allowed players to ping creatures or opponents, a common design trope for red creatures of that era intended to disrupt tempo during early-to-mid game play.
