Where it came from
Circle of Elders was released in 2015 as part of the Dragons of Tarkir expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a rare creature intended to support strategies focused on mana ramp, reflecting the set's thematic emphasis on the intersection of dragon kin and the various clans of the Tarkir plane. Its mechanics allow it to tap for multiple mana if the player controls a creature with power four or greater, incentivizing players to build decks around large, high-impact creatures.
The artwork for this card was created by Zack Stella, an artist known for his contributions to the Magic: The Gathering universe. Stella utilized a style that highlights the stoic and ancient nature of the character, emphasizing the elder’s role as a bridge between the physical and the mystical within the setting of Tarkir. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, if niche, inclusion for green-aligned decks that prioritize the board presence of formidable creatures.
