Circle of Protection: Red

Circle of Protection: Red was first released in 1995 as part of the Ice Age expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to introduce thematic elements of arctic survival and ancient lore, functioning as a standalone expansion that players could draft independently. The card itself represents a recurring defensive mechanic within the game, serving as a tactical counter to red-aligned spells and creatures by allowing players to pay mana to prevent incoming damage.

The artwork for this specific iteration was provided by illustrator Quinton Hoover. Hoover was a prominent artist during the early years of the game, known for his distinct, flowing style and use of soft, emotive color palettes. In this piece, he utilized his signature approach to depict the protective ward, which was well-received by players for its classic aesthetic. The card became a staple of early white-aligned control decks, solidifying its place in the game's long history of defensive utility.
