Circuitous Route was originally printed as part of the Guilds of Ravnica expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in 2018. The card is designed as a sorcery that facilitates mana ramp by allowing the player to search their library for two basic land cards. The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Milivoj Ćeran, known for his detailed fantasy and historical depictions. For this piece, Ćeran sought to capture the sense of travel across a vast, intricate cityscape, emphasizing the winding, multi-layered roads that give the card its name.
