Provenance

Where it came from

Círdan the Shipwright was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Tales of Middle-earth' Commander set, a collaborative expansion that integrated J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium into the trading card game. The card represents one of the oldest and wisest Elves in Middle-earth, known for his role as the keeper of the Grey Havens and his stewardship of Narya, the Ring of Fire. His inclusion in the set was intended to offer a commander capable of facilitating group-hug style gameplay, encouraging resource distribution among players to mirror his role as an advisor and caretaker.

The artwork was commissioned from Filipe Pagliuso, an artist known for his evocative character portraits within the fantasy genre. Pagliuso sought to capture Círdan's ancient, seafaring nature, focusing on the weight of his experience and the ethereal quality of the Elves of the Third Age. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for both its thematic accuracy and its unique political mechanics, which allow players to leverage the card’s ability to draw cards for the entire table as a diplomatic tool.
