Where it came from
Released in 1994 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set The Dark, Cleansing reflects the darker, more gothic aesthetic shift that Wizards of the Coast introduced following the game's initial debut. The set was designed to explore themes of folklore and horror, moving away from the high-fantasy tropes of the core Alpha and Beta releases to establish a distinct mechanical and visual identity within the game's burgeoning multiverse.
The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a prominent artist in the early days of Magic known for his ethereal and flowing style. Hoover’s artwork for Cleansing sought to capture the visceral theme of land destruction and board disruption, a mechanic that defined much of the set's controversial design philosophy. While the card is often cited by historians for its polarizing impact on gameplay balance during the mid-nineties, Hoover's contribution remains a noted piece of the game's formative artistic era.
