Where it came from
Cleansing Meditation was released in 2002 as part of the Torment expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore the mechanics of graveyard interaction and high-mana cost spells, serving as the second chapter in the Odyssey block. The card itself, a rare sorcery, was engineered as a powerful board wipe specifically targeting enchantments, reflecting the set's thematic emphasis on disruptive graveyard and permanent-based strategies.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Arnie Swekel, who contributed significantly to the visual identity of the era. Swekel’s design features a striking, ethereal aesthetic that aligns with the set's focus on the bleak, distorted landscapes of the plane of Otaria. Upon its release, the card saw moderate play in sideboard strategies for decks focusing on control and enchantment removal, though its effectiveness was often debated due to the specific conditions required to maximize its threshold ability.
