Where it came from
Clip Wings was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set returned players to the gothic horror plane of Innistrad, focusing on themes of madness and corruption following the release of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul. The card was designed as a thematic removal spell, emphasizing the vulnerability of flying creatures—often depicted as angels or spirits—to grounded traps and hunters in this dark, transformed landscape.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who captured the grim aesthetic of the set by depicting a hunter ensnaring an avian creature with weighted lines. The design aimed to provide players with a situational yet potent tool to force opponents to sacrifice their airborne threats, a mechanic that has seen consistent use in various formats for its ability to bypass hexproof and indestructible keywords.
