Where it came from
Clockwork Hydra was released in 2006 as part of the Time Spiral set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to be a love letter to the game's history, featuring numerous mechanical callbacks and 'timeshifted' reprints. This specific card was created to provide a complex, scaling threat that utilized the 'clockwork' counter mechanic, which had originally debuted in the early years of the game to simulate decaying mechanical structures.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Jeremy Jarvis, who was then a core part of the Wizards of the Coast creative team. Jarvis aimed to capture the visual identity of a machine-made beast, focusing on brass plating, intricate gears, and a sense of impending malfunction. Upon release, the card was noted by players for its tactical flexibility in limited formats, where its ability to reset its own counters offered a unique survival strategy compared to more traditional green creatures.
