Provenance

Where it came from

The Clockwork Steed debuted in the Fifth Edition core set of Magic: The Gathering, released in 1997. It was originally printed as part of the Antiquities expansion in 1994, a set centered on the artifact-heavy lore of the plane of Dominaria. The creature design reflects the mid-nineties aesthetic of Urza’s mechanical creations, intended to evoke a sense of high-fantasy clockwork machinery that functioned as a tactical resource in early gameplay.

The illustration for the Fifth Edition printing, credited to artist Anson Maddocks, captures the idiosyncratic, slightly surreal style that defined early Magic artwork. Maddocks, a foundational artist for the game, emphasized the mechanical, angular nature of the Steed to distinguish it from the more traditional biological creatures in the set. While the card is often remembered more for its nostalgic place in early deck-building than for its competitive viability, it remains a recognizable relic of the game's expansive formative years.
